A pilot project introducing fish-based meals in schools in Malta is set to be launched before the end of the current academic year as part of the Mediterranean islands’ government’s “Fish Fridays” initiative.
The initial phase will involve four schools and aims to test how the programme works in practice before it is expanded nationwide, including across island of Gozo.
The programme is designed to encourage students to eat fish every Friday while learning about the benefits of local fishing.
“Fish Fridays” will bring nutritionists and chefs into schools across Malta and Gozo, where they will talk to students about the role of fish in a balanced diet. The programme will begin with a pilot phase starting on 24 April.
Alicia Bugeja Said highlighted that only about 6% of children in Malta currently eat fish, raising concerns alongside growing childhood obesity levels.
Parents will also be invited to attend school sessions, where they can meet chefs, receive cooking tips, and access recipe booklets featuring Maltese dishes.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort to promote sustainable local fish consumption and healthier eating habits among children, amid ongoing concerns about rising obesity levels in schools.
