Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides officially opened the Nicosia Occupational Rehabilitation Unit, calling it a significant milestone in the country’s mental health reform efforts.
As part of a broader national strategy, vocational rehabilitation units are also being developed in Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca to support people with mental health conditions in rebuilding independence and re-entering the workforce.
Charalambides emphasised that meaningful employment is a key factor in recovery, helping to boost self-esteem, reduce stigma, and promote social reintegration.
The new facility will provide tailored rehabilitation programmes, work in partnership with employers, and coordinate with community mental health services to ensure continuous care and a smooth transition into employment.
The ministry also pointed to ongoing cooperation with Greece in advancing social economy initiatives within mental health, including the exchange of expertise and best practices.
According to the minister, the centre will strengthen collaboration between health, social welfare, and employment services, while enhancing rehabilitation support for vulnerable groups.
He also noted that engagement with employers is crucial to supporting beneficiaries in achieving independent working lives and addressing workplace stigma.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to investing in mental health infrastructure and expanding community-based rehabilitation services across the country.
