Latvian company SIA Animas selected for the national AI regulatory sandbox with a diabetes management solution

Latvian technology company SIA Animas has been approved to participate in the national regulatory environment, or artificial intelligence sandbox, with its solution Diabetes Assistant — an AI-powered platform designed for people living with diabetes. The project is one of only three selected from ten applications to take part in the government-established regulatory framework for testing artificial intelligence systems.

Diabetes Assistant is a solution developed in Latvia that helps people with diabetes manage their condition in everyday life using artificial intelligence technologies.

Designed for people living with diabetes as well as healthcare professionals, parents and guardians, the platform provides a convenient way to monitor daily health data and support informed decision-making. It brings together meal photo analysis, data from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors, and personalised recommendations on nutrition, treatment and lifestyle within a single application.

The special regulatory environment, or AI sandbox, was established in Latvia to enable companies to develop and test innovative AI solutions in a controlled and supervised setting, in compliance with the requirements of the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act. The aim of the regulatory framework is to foster the safe development of innovation while ensuring the protection of data, security and the public interest.

Participation in the sandbox involves cooperation with the relevant authorities, including the State Data Inspectorate, the Health Inspectorate and other participating institutions. Throughout the development and testing phases, the project’s compliance with regulatory requirements and its potential risks within the healthcare sector will be assessed.

At the same time, companies are provided with advisory support on regulatory requirements and the practical implementation of their systems.

For us, participation in the sandbox is a significant endorsement that a health technology solution developed in Latvia has the potential to evolve in line with the highest standards of safety and quality. Cooperation with public authorities allows us to improve the solution not only technologically, but also responsibly from both a regulatory and patient safety perspective.

Gatis Romanovskis, Chief Executive Officer of SIA Animas

Projects applying to participate in the regulatory sandbox were assessed by a committee established by the Artificial Intelligence Centre, which evaluated their innovation potential, technical readiness, alignment with digital transformation objectives, and need for regulatory oversight. Following the selection process, each project will be assigned individual operating conditions, including arrangements for data access and supervision.

SIA Animas specialises in the development of artificial intelligence and automation solutions. The company’s Diabetes Assistant has been designed for people living with Type 1 diabetes, helping them manage their health more effectively through personalised digital solutions.
