Analyzing data from over 7,000 adults in England, the study highlights the powerful impact of creative activities on wellbeing, showing benefits beyond typical sociodemographic factors like age or health.
With its accessibility and affordability, crafting could become a key tool in promoting public health, reducing anxiety and improving social connections.
Engaging in creating arts and crafts significantly predicted increased life satisfaction, a sense that life is worthwhile and happiness, above and beyond known sociodemographic predictors.
Researchers from Applied Social Change Hub, School of Psychology and Sport Science, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge (United Kingdom) suggest that this will be a useful tool at a public health level, noting that relative accessibility and affordability creating arts and crafting.
Participants’ reported happiness was significantly predicted by their engagement with creative arts and crafting, above and beyond the effects of age, gender, deprivation, poor health and being in work.
Researchers note that a range of studies show that engagement in art therapy results in a reduction in anxiety, depression and stress, and improvements in social connection, wellbeing and life satisfaction.
