New national overview to strengthen Sweden’s pharmaceutical preparedness

The E-hälsomyndigheten and Läkemedelsverket(Swedish government authorities under the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs that cooperate to support safe and efficient healthcare) are continuing to develop a national system that will provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the availability and demand for medicines in Sweden.

The assignment aims to create better conditions to anticipate and manage situations involving medicine shortages, thereby strengthening both preparedness and patient safety.

A national situational overview is an important foundation for a safer and more stable supply of medicines in Sweden, and therefore safer for patients

Sanna Sund, project manager at the E-hälsomyndigheten

Daily reporting from pharmacies and wholesalers

The proposed national overview will be based on two types of daily data: sales data and stock information from pharmaceutical wholesalers, community pharmacies and hospital pharmacies.

The E-hälsomyndigheten will be responsible for collecting and compiling the data, which will then be sent to the Läkemedelsverket to produce the national situation reports.

Over time, the technical solution developed by the agency could become an important tool for planning healthcare capacity both in peacetime and during crises or war.

At present there is no authority that collects information on stock levels, so developing such a system for data collection is our main focus within this assignment. In addition, we will develop a new delivery tool that in the long term could replace existing solutions that do not meet future requirements,” Sund said.

The authorities will continue the work according to plan, in close dialogue with pharmacies and wholesalers, which are essential for ensuring that the system becomes comprehensive and effective.
