Zurich, Switzerland — Nestlé’s chief executive has publicly expressed regret after the Swiss food group pulled some of its baby formula products from sale across multiple countries over safety concerns, marking one of the largest recalls in the company’s history.

In a video message released by the company, CEO Philipp Navratil apologised directly to parents, carers and customers for the worry and disruption caused by the recall, which covered infant nutrition products sold in dozens of markets.

He said all affected products have now been identified and recall measures completed. So far, company officials say no illnesses have been linked to the withdrawn formula.

The recall, which stemmed from a quality issue discovered late last year at a Nestlé production facility in the Netherlands, prompted voluntary removal of certain formula batches from shelves in Europe and other regions.

A precautionary approach was taken after concerns were raised that some raw ingredients could harbour contaminants, leading authorities to advise parents to avoid the specified batches.

Navratil acknowledged the challenge the recall has posed for families and reaffirmed Nestlé’s commitment to infant food safety. The episode adds pressure on the company just as the new CEO pursues a turnaround strategy following a difficult period for the business in 2025.

The recall has also weighed on market confidence, contributing to downward pressure on Nestlé’s share price.

Nestlé’s statement emphasised its priority remains protecting infants’ wellbeing and working closely with local authorities to ensure all necessary information reaches caregivers and retailers.
