Smartphone App helps tackle mild depression with CBT techniques

A new study shows that smartphones, often blamed for harming mental health, could actually help people manage mild depression. Researchers tested a mobile app based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a proven method for treating mental health issues.

Around 11% of people worldwide experience mild depression, called “subthreshold depression.” Although not as severe as major depression, it can still seriously affect daily life.

CBT works by helping people change negative thoughts and behaviours. It is often as effective, or even more effective, than medication. However, finding enough mental health professionals to meet demand remains a global challenge.

To help address this, researchers created an app that teaches five key CBT skills. These included encouraging mood-boosting activities, changing negative thinking patterns, improving problem-solving skills, communicating more effectively, and learning habits for better sleep.

In the study, nearly 4,000 adults in Japan with mild depression were split into two groups. One group used the app, while the other did not. Most people using the app completed their lessons within six to ten weeks.

The results were positive. Those who used the app showed lower levels of depression, anxiety, and sleep problems, with improvements lasting for at least six months.

Previous research on CBT apps had mixed results. Some studies showed small benefits, while others found no improvement, especially when tested on people with no major mental health history.

However, this new study found that certain parts of the app worked better than others. Sleep training and mood-boosting activities were especially helpful, while the tools for changing negative thoughts were less effective.

Researchers now plan to design a more personalised version of the app. The goal is to match each person with the skills that will help them the most, offering better and longer-lasting mental health support.
