2024 EU4Health Work Programme: new projects advancing digital healthcare across the EU

New projects funded under the 2024EU4Health calls for proposal aimed at advancing digital healthcare across the EU have recently started.

  • COMPASS-AI aims to overcome barriers to safe and effective implementation of AI in healthcare, with a focus on cancer care and remote regions. The project will gather a multidisciplinary community of experts to identify and validate best practices of AI in healthcare through real-world pilot studies. Moreover, the project plans to set up an interactive digital platform mapping AI deployment experiences and fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to improve AI literacy.

Nine other new initiatives facilitate the implementation of the eHealth Digital Service Infrastructure (eHDSI)across the EU. The eHDSI, branded under the name “MyHealth@EU”, is a common EU infrastructure enabling individuals to access their health data any time, download it in portable digital formats and benefit from seamless healthcare data flow when travelling across the EU.

With a combined total of €8.22 million of EU investment, the projects align with the goals of the European Health Data Space (EHDS), giving EU countries the possibility to exchange health data in a secure, efficient and interoperable way.

  • The objective of DVKA ePrescription B is to support Germany’s efforts to be part of a secure peer-to-peer network of governments across EU countries, allowing citizens from other EU countries to have their ePrescriptions and eDispensations recognised and used safely when they are in Germany, through the MyHealth@EU infrastructure.

  • Through FLaReSFinland will be developing and deploying a Laboratory Result Report Service to enable cross-border laboratory data exchange in Europe, expanding MyHealth@EU services for advanced healthcare services for healthcare professionals, Finnish citizens travelling abroad and for other European citizens visiting Finland.

  • The project LT NCPeH eLAB is dedicated to extending cross-border laboratory results services in Lithuania under MyHealth@EU, ensuring stable operations, participating in tests and expanding service coverage for laboratories, healthcare providers and citizens.

  • MH4EU-ES-LR aims to improve MyHealth@EU services in Spain by enabling the secure cross-border exchange of laboratory results and reports. The project builds on existing ePrescription and patient summary services to strengthen cross-border health data exchange.

  • MyHealthCY advances Cyprus‘s integration into MyHealth@EU, focusing on cross-border healthcare delivery through secure exchange of ePrescriptions, and expanding services to include laboratory results and medical imaging.

  • Setup BE-NCPeH PS-A prepares Belgium to connect its eHealth ecosystem to MyHealth@EU. The project will focus on setting up of a Belgian National Contact Point for cross-border eHealth and perform preparatory work for enabling secure and efficient cross-border medical data exchange.

  • RO-MI-LR-DR (starting in 2026) aims to develop services for medical images, laboratory results and discharge reports in Romania to enhance cross-border healthcare quality and efficiency.

  • EHDSIDenmark (starting in 2026) aims to establish Denmark‘s National Contact Point for eHealth to implement, test and launch Patient Summary and ePrescription services. This initiative will enable data exchange with other EU countries, allowing pharmacies to dispense medicines prescribed abroad and healthcare providers to access patients’ summaries when needed.

  • Preparing Ukraine for integration into the MyHealth@EU network, EU HEALS addresses technical and regulatory gaps, facilitating pilot activities for cross-border healthcare data exchange as part of Ukraine’s EU candidate status. Key activities include analysing compliance reports, developing technical specifications, piloting a National Contact Point server for electronic prescription and patient summary exchange with Estonia and creating software prototypes for data transformation and visualisation.

Background

EU4Health is the fourth and largest of the EU health programmes. The EU4Health programme goes beyond an ambitious response to the COVID-19 crisis to address the resilience of European healthcare systems. The programme provides funding to national authorities, health organisations and other bodies through grants and public procurement, contributing to a healthier Europe. HaDEA manages the vast majority of the total EU4Health budget and implements the programme by managing calls for proposals and calls for tenders from 2021 to 2027.
