Malta’s Elenya Spiteri named finalist for major award with AI-powered smart pill dispenser for seniors

One of the finalists of the AmCham EU Youth Entrepreneurship Award, 19-year-old Elenya Spiteri from Malta, has presented MEDILERT — Europe’s first AI-powered smart pill dispenser for older adults.

The voice-assisted and GDPR-compliant device is designed to help seniors stay independent while giving families and caregivers greater peace of mind. Up to 11% of hospitalisations among adults aged 65+ are linked to medication errors.

Spiteri says the idea was inspired by watching her grandparents struggle with managing complex prescriptions.

On her Facebook page, Elenya wrote: “They say entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint, and at 19, I’m just getting started.” She added that becoming a finalist for the youth entrepreneurship award presented by the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union is “a huge boost” for her mission to support older adults’ autonomy and independence.

She also thanked AmCham EU and JA Europe for the opportunity, saying she is excited for what comes next.

Three finalists will pitch their ideas live at the AmCham EU gala in Brussels on 4 June.

We wish Malta’s Elenya Spiteri the very best of luck with her innovative medical invention, MEDILERT.
