This unique aircraft, an MD-10 converted from a cargo plane with the generous support of FedEx, serves as the world’s only fully accredited ophthalmic teaching hospital on wheels. Its mission is to combat avoidable blindness by providing top-notch eye care training and services to underserved regions around the globe.

The Flying Eye Hospital isn’t just a plane; it’s a fully functional hospital equipped with an operating room, classroom, and recovery area. Inside, cutting-edge medical technology meets advanced training facilities. The interior features an audio-visual system that streams live 3D surgeries, allowing training participants to observe and interact with procedures as if they were performing them themselves. This hands-on learning is complemented by a state-of-the-art mobile simulation center, which uses virtual reality and lifelike mannequins to teach complex ophthalmic procedures in a controlled environment.

Over the past four decades, the Flying Eye Hospital has journeyed to over 95 countries, providing invaluable training to local eye care professionals and raising global awareness about the importance of eye health. Each visit not only includes direct training but also engages with high-level officials to advocate for better investment in eye care services. This comprehensive approach helps improve local health policies and fosters lasting partnerships with communities.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Orbis adapted its approach by incorporating virtual training. Through its telemedicine platform, Cybersight, the organization reached 43 countries, continuing its mission despite travel restrictions. This shift to blended learning, combining in-person and virtual education, ensures that eye care professionals receive a robust, well-rounded training experience, even when the Flying Eye Hospital isn’t physically present.

The Flying Eye Hospital remains a symbol of innovation and dedication, demonstrating how the synergy of medicine and technology can address global health challenges and make a profound impact on the fight against blindness.
