Austria launches EU e-prescriptions and patient summaries

Since February 2026, Austria has taken key steps towards a connected European health system: with the EU prescription and the introduction of the EU Patient Summary, two core services of MyHealth@EU are now being launched in Austria.

Electronic prescriptions issued in Austria can now, for the first time, be dispensed in another participating MyHealth@EU country. At launch, the service is available between Austria and the Czech Republic, with more countries to follow gradually.

From 2029, the EU prescription will be mandatory across all EU Member States.

Patients will now benefit in a tangible way from the European exchange of health data. In the future, e-prescriptions can be redeemed abroad within the EU, and in case of treatment, doctors will have immediate access to important health information — securely, in line with data protection rules, and on a voluntary basis.

For pharmacies, the EU prescription also represents an important expansion of their role: electronic prescriptions for patients from other participating MyHealth@EU countries (initially the Czech Republic) will soon be dispensed by Austrian public pharmacies.

In the coming weeks, the EU Patient Summary will also become available. This will allow doctors in Austria to access a standardised medical summary when treating patients from other MyHealth@EU countries.

As with the EU prescription, Austrian doctors will initially be able to retrieve patient summaries from the Czech Republic. For patients, this means that in emergencies or during unplanned medical visits, relevant health information will be quickly available, even when language barriers exist.

The EU prescription and the EU Patient Summary are part of MyHealth@EU, the European infrastructure for the secure exchange of electronic health data between EU and EEA countries. They are among the key preparatory steps for the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

Participation in the EU prescription is voluntary during the pilot phase. The following options are available:

  • online via the ELGA portal using ID Austria, or
  • in writing via the eHealth service centre.
