New AI-powered health assistant ZdrAVKO launched in Croatia

Croatia is working towards digital health solutions, expanding the role of technology in how citizens access information and navigate the healthcare system. One of the latest steps in this direction is the launch of ZdrAVKO, a digital health assistant developed by the Croatian Institute of Public Health.

ZdrAVKO is available to citizens 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Access is simple — by clicking a link or scanning a QR code with a mobile device, a conversation with ZdrAVKO automatically opens in the WhatsApp application, after which the assistant provides clear guidance on how to continue the interaction.

Minister of Health Assoc. Prof. Irena Hrstić praised the work of the Croatian Institute of Public Health in developing this digital tool and explained what makes ZdrAVKO distinctive:

“ZdrAVKO differs from previous applications because it provides personalised rather than automated responses, directs users to further actions, and is based on scientific and professional information. Many patients, due to ‘white coat syndrome’, forget to ask important questions during medical visits. This application helps them come prepared, making their communication with healthcare professionals more precise and effective.”

Director of the Croatian Institute of Public Health Assoc. Prof. Krunoslav Capak highlighted that the digital assistant was developed with the aim of improving health literacy and expanding the dissemination of scientifically grounded information relevant to citizens’ health.

“In an environment dominated by chronic non-communicable diseases, most of which can be prevented through primary prevention, the health literacy of our citizens is extremely important. This is not easy to achieve — it requires education and proper information so that we first increase knowledge and then influence lifestyle habits and attitudes,” Capak emphasised.

He explained that, using artificial intelligence, ZdrAVKO understands questions and provides concrete answers based on the databases and information available to it.

“Based on the most frequent questions asked by citizens, we will modify the database and provide better, faster, and more comprehensive information on topics of greatest interest,” he added.

Assistant Director Benjak referred to the practical application of the digital assistant and announced activities aimed at making ZdrAVKO widely accessible to citizens.

“From 1 February, we are launching a campaign in pharmacies and health centres, where citizens will be able to access a QR code. To use the service, a smartphone with the WhatsApp application installed is required,” Benjak explained, adding that the project is supported by software companies experienced in artificial intelligence applications.
